Graduation is right around the corner and there is no stopping you. Whether you are finished high school, cegep, or university, it’s a time to celebrate your accomplishments. Therefore, it is necessary that you look your best on the big day. While you may think that you can just pull on your best suit, the tie is an important part of the ensemble: It determines how you will look overall and how others perceive you.
Length is the most important part of choosing a tie. Long ties just look ridiculous and if you are going to wear a short tie, might as well have gone for the bowtie. Your tie should be just above your belt buckle and about 4 inches wide in order to look elegant. Ties that are too long end up looking really sloppy because it will look really heavy on you and that is the last thing that you want. You are finally moving onto the next chapter of your life and your appearance should reflect that.
Texture is also integral because they need to go with the suit that you plan to wear. Since it will be summer, you don’t want to wear a wool tie, so opt for lighter materials such as silk. Always pair a business suit with a silk tie because mixed textures can offer an unpleasant contrast. More importantly, you don't want to be sweating through your suit on this special occasion.
Colours are critical to how you will look. The tie better match your suit because it can look very wrong otherwise. A solid tie is versatile and can be worn for many occasions, so this would be the safe choice. However, you can also choose lighter colours or patterns provided that your suit is also a soft shade of blue, beige, or green.
Whatever you choose, the key is to look dapper on your big day.
